Hello all. A ten hour flight from Dallas to Rio, after a five hour layover in Dallas, takes something out of you. However, I am here, safe and sound. I sat with Eduardo on the flight, a Carioca (Rio native), who praised my choice to stay in Santa Teresa. Santa Teresa is a bohemian section of town where, I am told, the artists and intellectuals took hold years ago. I took a walk around the neighborhood and clearly I am not in Philadelphia anymore. I am out of my safety zone, which is good for me. My hostel has Brits, Germans, and Brazilians in it and no one is here yet (Carnaval kicks off on Friday). Fun. I look forward to talking, as best I can, with all of them. My Portuguese is bad, however I´m trying. Once I get my bearings, I´ll share more. Ate logo.

Where do they sell bearings? I don't think being there for 2 hours of being there is enough time to judge just how bad your Portuguese is. Everyone at work is still picking up lint off the carpet, good sign. Miss you already.
ReplyDeleteJust reread my comment and I realize how bad my English is. Oops..
ReplyDeleteSounds great! Looking at Santa Teresa on Google Earth. Looks densely populated but loads of trees and foliage. Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteJon,
ReplyDeleteThe Sunday, 01/26/13, New York Times had an article, "Rio’s Exploding Manholes Menace Residents and Highlight Aging Infrastructure." Be careful walking past manhole colvers and as a general rule of thumb -- be careful of all holes of any kind : )
Bravo -- I am happy for you! Mike
Monique has already been picking things up off the floor; Tanya even plugged in the vacuum cleaner; and, the morning folks clean off the tables! Shades of the Fearless Leader linger on!
ReplyDeleteGlad you're there, safe and sound. Enjoy!
